How to be a Word Collector
Writers must love words- what they mean, how they sound, how they feel, and how they are used. When I was growing up, I used to spend hours pouring over the Dictionary and our set of World Encyclopedias. Even today, my crinkly-spined Thesaurus is never too far from my reach when writing or jotting down ideas. Take out your writing notebook, and spend some time each week writing about words.
Here are some ideas for how you can be a "Word Collector."
Jot down:
-Words you like
-New words
-Expressions that sound odd or interesting
-Words, or a string of words, that make good poem starters
-Words with unique origins -Words with stories behind them
Deepen your Word Collection by taking some of those words you've written down and imagine what ideas or images they bring up. Consider how they feel in your mouth or how they sound. Do any of the words remind you of something? Write it down.
Have fun with words!
Keep writing!
